Most people have probably heard about Semester registration, but may not be able to explain exactly what it is. It is a mandatory registration process all students have to go trough at the start of the semester. Semester registration is done online via the system StudentWeb, that all students can access.

As part of semester registration, the student is usually automatically signed up for teaching and examination (from here on called course registration and registration for examination) in the courses of the semester. When the semester registration is finished, the course registration and registration for examination are automatically registered in FS.

There are some exceptions, as with single courses, further education or courses that are not part of the study. These students sign up manually in StudentWeb or get signed up by the administration. They will receive information about this.

Students who do not complete their semester registration, will lose their place. The study administration send out information to the students, where they emphasize the importance of this.

How is this related to Canvas?

All courses in all study programmes also have to be registered in FS. Once a course is registered in FS, a similar course is created in Canvas. The course registration that the student created in StudentWeb, automatically gives the student access to the similar course in Canvas.

The point is that there is a direct link between FS and Canvas. Students who are supposed to have access, get access. If students tell you they cannot access Canvas, you are not supposed to fix it! Instead, ask if they have completed the semester registration:

If the answer is no, they need to so.
If the answer is yes and they still cannot access, something probably went wrong during the semester registration. At worst, a registration for examination is missing in FS, which could mean no access to the examination room at the examination date. In such cases, always refer the student to the study administration at your faculty.
