The planning of COIL begins with collaboration between teachers from different institutions who wish to include intercultural and global learning in their teaching.

COIL in 4 Phases

A COIL project typically consists of 4 phases.

These are the topics you and your partner need to discuss when designing a COIL module:

Language
Meeting times across time zones
The learning objectives of the COIL module in relation to the course objectives
Assessment methods
Teaching methods and class/group organization
Selection of technological communication and collaboration tools

Students work together to:

Develop effective international/intercultural teams
Discuss course assignments and content
Complete a project-based activity as part of their coursework
Reflect on both the academic content of the course and the intercultural exchange that takes place

During the four phases, students will:

Collaborate with each other throughout the project. It is important to first spend time getting to know each other through icebreakers, building trust, and becoming accustomed to communicating online and in a language other than their native tongue.
Be divided into groups that will collaborate on the tasks they receive. This may involve comparative discussions on the tasks, brainstorming, and proposing solutions.
Work together on a shared task through dialogue and academic discussions, preparing the presentation.
Submit their task solutions. They will reflect on their learning throughout the process, including the academic content, collaboration, and intercultural learning.
Conclusion: What did the students learn academically, in terms of communication, what challenges did they face, how did they solve problems, and did they gain new perspectives on others, themselves, or their subject?

Professors work together to:

Define student learning goals
Determine the length of the interaction
Design comparative and collaborative activities
Select methodology and technology tools for collaboration
Monitor student work and learning

As an instructor, during the four phases you should:

Introduce COIL and the shared task. Prepare students by emphasizing that they are dependent on collaborating with each other. Suggest icebreakers and facilitate them. Monitor the students and provide guidance if they encounter difficulties.
Organize the groups that will work together, teach, and assign tasks. Follow up and provide guidance throughout the process.
Provide academic support, organize plenary activities, and guide the students.
Facilitate student reflection on the COIL experience, key learning points, and the process. Evaluation and conclusion: positive experiences, challenges, learning points, what can be improved or further developed, etc. Tip: Keep it simple and fun!
